As global plastic bans continue to deepen, China’s biodegradable plastics market exceeded RMB 50 billion in 2025, with a compound annual growth rate surpassing 25%.

Fully biodegradable materials such as PLA (polylactic acid) and PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoates), with their excellent biocompatibility and composting degradation properties, have become the preferred alternative to traditional plastics in food packaging. Dongguan, known as the “World’s Factory,” introduced the “Dongguan Three-Year Action Plan for Plastic Pollution Control (2026-2028)” in 2026, requiring all supermarkets, farmers’ markets, and fresh food e-commerce platforms in the city to fully adopt biodegradable plastic packaging products by the end of 2026. Market demand exhibits three key characteristics: stringent compliance requirements (compostable certification required), strong customization demand, and high supply chain responsiveness requirements.

Currently, Dongguan has more than five professional PLA/PHA fruit box service providers, and biodegradable blister packaging is accelerating its penetration from premium brands into the mass market.
